Q + A

What is the closest airport to Merida?

There are two flights options when travelling to Merida, Mexico:

1) Fly to Cancun Airport (CUN) > Train to Merida

Flights to Cancun tend to be more affordable and there are more flight times scheduled per day. If you fly to Cancun, you can choose to take the new Tren Maya. This is a new train project that connects major metropolis cities in Mexico. The train will take you from Cancun airport directly to Merida in about 3.5 hours. You can choose the Premier or Tourist Class ranging from $370 – 1560 pesos ($30 – 127 CAD). You can purchase tickets here but please note, you cannot buy tickets too far in advance so you will need to look at purchasing your tickets closer to your arrival date.

2) Fly to Merida Airport (MID)

You may also choose to fly directly to the Merida Airport and take a quick shuttle to your desired hotel. Most hotels will include a free shuttle to and from the Merida Airport. If your hotel does not offer a direct shuttle, services are available at Viator here.

How can we get around the town of Merida?

Merida is a very large city with endless options for travel. Uber is widely used and affordable (especially if you are used to Canadian fares). We like this option, as you can see the fare total before you travel!

You can also hail a taxi on the streets of Merida. If you do so, be sure to confirm the price with the driver before you accept. You will find that there are both metered taxis and zoned taxis available. We tend to find that the metered fares are the more affordable option of the two.

Bus or Collectivo are two other options available in the city. We suggest the bus system if you are the adventurous type. You can find a detailed explanation of the bus system here. The Collectivo is a van-style taxi where you will share the ride with other travellers. This system is a very economic choice. You can hail a collectivo like you would a taxi and you pay your fee when exiting the van.

When will the Bride and Groom be arriving?

Fernando and Maria will be arriving to Mexico about 1 week prior and staying 1 week after the wedding (March 15 - March 30, 2025).

What are you best places to eat in Merida?

The culinary options are endless in Merida! From street stands to fine dining experiences, you can find something for everyone to enjoy. You can find high-end dining experiences on Paseo Montejo (the historic hub in Merida) but also expect to find delicious and economic options all up and down this street as well!

If you are looking for an out-of-this-world Michelin-style dining experience, we highly enjoyed KU'UK!

Alternatively, some of our favourite eats were those which we stumbled upon while exploring the city. Stop at any one of the local taco stands and the flavours will not disappoint!
